The Artist
I'm Zariq (she/her), a multidisciplinary folk art artist of Malaysian origin and currently residing and practising in Gloucestershire, UK. The fascination towards cultural and natural heritage has always been the core of my art practices. As a self taught, I explore various visual art techniques to document the knowledge about local folk heritage, flora and fauna.
In an effort to embrace my present while staying intact with my roots, my art has been the work of fusion or juxtapositions combining the knowledge of the British heritage and mine.
Through my own brand, Batikshire, I make and sell Batik pieces inspired by British woodlands and countrysides. I also conduct Batik workshop, well being Batik workshop for Honour Thy Woman Group and art workshop for children with Gloucestershire Libraries. Other than that, I freelance illustrate for some independent authors, artists and organisations such as Borneo Boat Lute Revival, and Justice for Sisters. Currently, I work as a community producer for Strike-A-Light.
Beginning January 2024, I'm doing my residency at The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, Cheltenham wherein I'll keep honing my storytelling skills through the Batik art and experimenting with natural dye.
